TRADE STA PISTICS.
The announcement by the Colonial Secretary
of Hong Kong that it is proposed to re-establish,
on a more effective basis, the statistical branch
of the Imports and Exports Department of that
Colony, is of considerable interest to all who desire
to follow the movement of China's foreign trade.
The lack of any means of ascertaining the countries
of origin or destination of Chinese imports and
exports passing through Hong Kong has seriously
impaired the value of the excellent returns published
by the Chinese Maritime Customs, and, apart from
their usefulness to merchants in the Colony itself
the issue of statistics of this nature will be
welcomed by everyone interested in the trade of
China.
